Student body diversifies, swells to 30,000 plus

February 7, 1975

"From an original enrollment of 196 in the fall of 1949 to a staggering 31,228 in the fall semester of 1974, Cal State Long Beach has grown to have one of the largest student enrollments in the country."

What began as a small college, opening with only a junior and senior class (underclassmen were admitted the year after), is now considered one of the nation's leading urban comprehensive universities. With a continually growing student population, CSULB has no choice but to expand.

The university campus began as two converted apartment buildings, and soon expanded to its present-day state as a permanent site for the university was established.

The growing student population is evident from the number of students in each classroom. Who hasn't walked into a class this semester that was standing room only? The layout of the campus gives away a large student body - the trek from the music department to the liberal arts buildings is no laughing matter.

Nontheless, a growing student body is a testament to a strong professional force in the future.
