Proposed Budget Increases Fees

January 28, 1989

"Students enrolled in the California State University system and other California public universities may face a ten percent fee increase in the fall if the governor's 1989-90 budget is adopted."

And thus, history repeats itself. The top story in today's Daily Forty-Niner echoed the budget issues addressed in the 1989 story. With California State University Board of Trustees of past and present expressing similar concerns over proposed budget cuts, what will become of the CSU system? As CSU Chancellor Charles Reed so eloquently put it, "I do think we are heading down the road to funding and building world-class prisons and second-class universities."

The 1989 story described the concerns faced by the CSU Board of Trustees and the fee increase students would face if the budget were to pass. This is the essence of today's top story, complete with similar, if not the same, concerns expressed by the Board of Trustees. Who knew 19 years later that the CSU system would be facing the same dilema.

While California faces a $14.5 billion deficit, government officials must decide where their priorities lie. And quite frankly, shouldn't this be a no-brainer?
